Medical Hair Restoration Techniques - Surgical and Non-Surgical Procedures

Hair loss has a very important role to play on a person’s self-confidence and state of mind. Many factors contribute to hair loss, such as family genetics, medications, and treatments. To combat hair loss, one must consider different hair restoration methods. Some of these hair restoration methods are surgical, some are non-surgical and they are conducted in any hair restoration clinic in Hyderabad and other metropolitan cities in India.

Surgical and Non-Surgical Methods

Non-surgical hair replacement is a wonderful option for people who do not want to go for an invasive procedure to resolve their hair loss issues. However, most consumers are unaware of the pros and cons of selecting a procedure. Non-surgical hair restoration techniques can only be used by a certain subset of patients, who are at a certain stage of hair loss. Once hair loss becomes drastic, surgical is the only way to go.  The surgical methods of hair restoration are the following.

·         Strip technique- One of the more invasive hair restoration techniques is the strip technique, where the plastic surgeon extracts a portion of the scalp in the back, and attaches the scalp back very carefully without much scarring. The strip is then divided into individual grafts or follicular units.

·         Follicular unit extraction-This is another method where devices are used to extract the hair individually. It is a painstaking process where you extract each hair separately. The real skill in the procedure of hair restoration is how the hair is put back and how the hair line is designed. If the procedure is not done properly, the end result may look unnatural.

·         Mosaic Hair Restoration-Often, hair restoration surgeons choose predetermined zones which are composed of one, two or three hair follicles to extract. But, follicular units contain many number of hair, and they are not restricted to the scalp alone. Follicular units vary from person to person. Mosaic Hair Restoration adapts to the individualized follicular unit arrangement pattern at the recipient area, and never goes for one particular technique for all recipients.

·         Follicular Isolation Technique-This technique, also known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), is a very popular procedure for hair restoration. It involves removing a group of follicles (in one unit) with a punch device.

·         Follicular Unit Grafting-Follicular Unit Grafting or (FUG) is a procedure which transfers entire follicular units from the permanent donor zone on the back of the scalp to the balding areas. This is also known as single strip harvesting, and involves the donor tissue being removed in one piece. FUG keeps follicular units intact and protects the individual’s hair follicles from getting damaged.

·         Microscopic Dissection-This procedure involves the donor tissue being transferred with the help of single-strip harvesting. It is separated into individual follicular units with the help of a stereomicroscope. This is a very effective procedure as the recipient sites are small, the bald tissue is removed and it does not have to be transplanted.
